S.L. Benfica once again missed out on the domestic league title, as rivals F.C. Porto won both the league and the Champions League. As a consolation, it beat Porto to win the domestic cup competition. The club also mourned the death of Hungarian striker Miklós Fehér, who aged 24, died from a heart attack in the away fixture at Vitória Guimarães.
